In the months separating the start of the coronavirus pandemic and JMU beginning its 2020-21 basketball season, many wondered if they’d get the chance to see the Dukes open the new Atlantic Union Bank Center (AUBC) or if they’d even play.
The Atlantic Union Bank Center opened in November, 2020 as the sparkling new home of the James Madison University men’s and women’s basketball programs, while also opening the door to a multitude of other events to benefit the campus and the local community. It stands as the preeminent facility of its type in the entire Shenandoah Valley.

Save. The first shovels struck ground for the new Union Bank and Trust Center on April 27. The arena will replace the Convocation Center and sit across from the East Campus Dining Hall. Construction is expected to be finished before the 2020-21 basketball season.
The new arena will replace the Convocation Center — located on University Boulevard near Port Republic Road — which was built in 1982 and seats 6,426. JMU officials said they are unsure of what the school will use the Convocation Center for once the basketball teams move into the Union Bank & Trust Center.
In a neat twist, students will actually get good seats in this arena, instead of being relegated to the rafters. In short, this new arena looks like everything the Convo is not. The entire project is expected to cost $88 million. Which is a lot of money and the main reason JMU is asking for your money. And our money. And everyone else’s money.
